Hojicha is another creative use of tea by-products by the Japanese. Hojicha was commercialized once mechanical harvesters started being used in Japan to compensate for labor shortages. The tea plant was shorn of everything, and the mess was separated later. The best leaves became Sencha, the larger leaves became Yanagi, and the stems became Hojicha. Tea terms in Japan have several meanings, and hojicha can mean several types of tea. For us, it is roasted twigs.

Victoria H. ★★★★★

Brewed a cup after dinner and it's much gentler than I expected for a roasted tea, almost nutty with barely any bitterness. It's nice knowing it comes from tea by-products too, so nothing goes to waste.

Daniel ★★★★★

The roasted, almost smoky scent hits you the second you open the bag, and the brew stays smooth without any bitterness. I've been drinking it in the evenings since it doesn't keep me up.

Matthew U. ★★★★★

I wasn't expecting the low caffeine to be this noticeable — I can drink a cup after dinner and still sleep fine. The toasty, almost smoky aroma fills the kitchen as soon as the water hits the leaves.
