King of Bai Mudan

King of Bai Mudan - Main image
$7 $14 In stock

Fuding, in China's Fujian province, has long been the heartland of white tea, and it's where Mike Harney travels to source the finest examples. On a recent visit, amid the region's quietly transformative work with white tea processing, he found this: a white tea that earns its name.

Where our classic Mutan White offers a delicate introduction to Bai Mudan, the King brings a noticeably sweeter, fuller character. Large, downy silver tips and whole green leaves unfurl into a pale yellow cup with soft vegetal notes of bok choy and fresh hay, light-bodied but with more presence than you'd expect.

Joseph ★★★★★

I brewed this at 185 degrees for about two minutes and got a cup that's sweet and almost hay-like, with none of the bitterness I sometimes get from white tea. It's from Fuding, which seems to make a difference in how mellow it tastes.

Natalie ★★★★★

The leaves are bigger and looser than the white teas I usually buy, and they unfurl into this soft, honeyed cup that I've been sipping all afternoon. Fuding really does something special with Bai Mudan.

Abigail X. ★★★★★

Steeping this Bai Mudan at 185°F brought out a gentle melon sweetness I wasn't expecting from a white tea. The leaves are whole and fuzzy, clearly handled with care, and they hold up for three good infusions.
